Four Reasons Why I Love a 50mm Lens

I believe a 50mm lens is an important staple in any photographer’s kit.  Here are the top 4 reasons why I love mine:

  1. 1. Aperture – A 50mm prime lens will open up nice and wide, allowing you to shoot with apertures below f/5.6 (many zoom lenses that cover the 50mm focal range do not open up below f/5.6 at 50mm)
  2. 2. Sharpness – As a general rule, prime (fixed focal length) lenses are sharper than zoom lenses
  3. 3. Angle of View – A 50mm focal length allows me to shoot small group portraits and tight single portraits with a lovely bokeh (with a wide aperture so that is your blurry background)
  4. 4. A Day Out – When needing to choose one lens to take on a day out with my family, I often choose the 50mm as it means I can get in close to the action and catch all the details of our day (such as the photo above).  As well as being able to shoot wider angle (more story-telling) images (such as the image below).
